BETTER QUALITY CONTROL

Actavis is one of the world''s leading players in the development, manufacture, and sale of first-class generic pharmaceuticals. In the year 2004 the ERP system XAL was implemented by HugurAx at Actavis in Malta. Implementation of a new ERP system is a complicated process in a pharmaceutical company since it has to comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) rules for pharmaceutical production. Franco Gatt is acting Managing Director at Actavis in Malta.

“XAL is not made for pharmaceutical companies but with the work and the adjustments that we have made in collabaration with HugurAx it enables Actavis to comply with GMP rules very well. We had to go through a very thorough validation process during the implementation phase. The system still serves us well but we are constantly seeking to enhance XAL to ensure compliance with the latest requirements. ”

Actavis Malta is using XAL competently. Approval of vendors and quality control of raw materials and final goods are a central part of the system. The system secures that only raw materials that have been approved can be transferred from the warehouse area to the production area and that only approved products can be transferred back into the warehouse and sold. In the production process, the dispensing of materials are also controlled by the system.

“XAL is with us every step of the way and therefore it has impact on the overall quality of our product; from the ordering of raw materials, processing them and from packing to shipping. We make use of handheld computers wherever we can for more efficency and computer weights, as the weighing requires precision, as does the approval of materials. Using XAL does in many ways result in better quality control. There is, however, always room for improvement and we are always looking for ways to make it better and keep on enhancing the system in order to gain better control.”
